A classic stucco bungalow was woefully in need of major repairs, but such a situation proviides for great oppportunities.
Situated atop a hill in Maxwell Park neighborhood, Brian Laczko designed a new home for himself and life partner, artist Laetitia Sonami. Being relegated to a basement studio for decades, his inspiration was light and space for her new studio. Haunching up on top of the existing structure, provides not only a 18-foot ceiling but also a sitting mezzanine with long views out to the hills of the South Bay.
With the architectural program needing to be a working studio, the idea is to artfully employ utilitarian materials like structural plywood, recycled redwood and douglas fir boards reclaimed from the old roof structure. And the artist's space is beautifully appointed by a chandelier from 10 years worth of burn-out light bulbs.
